Joe’s Vitals

Age: Old. I remember cars without seatbelts, beer in steel cans without pop-tops, street cars, electric buses, paying 12 cents for a bus ride with a free transfer and penny candy.

Family info: Married, with 3 children.

Sports rooting interests: Blackhawks, Wolves, White Sox, Bears, and Bulls. I also have a special dislike for the Redwings, Twins, and Packers. I’m not totally into soccer, but I do enjoy watching it. I don’t know much about the game, but I like to watch rugby, especially the Sirens.

Chicago cred: Born in Chicago on the Southside. Lived on the near west and near northwest side for almost 40 years; currently living near O’Hare airport in Des Plaines.

Chicago sports cred: I went to Blackhawk games when Moose Vasko played and saw the “Million Dollar Line” of Red Hay, Murray Balfour, and Bobby Hull. I went to Bears games in Wrigley Field. My parents attended Chicago Cardinal* games in Comiskey Park. I saw stock car races, College All-Star, and Armed Forces games in Soldier Field. I attended college basketball doubleheaders in Chicago Stadium. I saw the Chicago Zephyrs** play pro basketball, and pro wrestling in the International Amphitheatre. I even saw roller hockey and Roller Derby in the old Chicago Coliseum.

Hobby and leisure: I like to jog, rollerblade, golf, and drink an occasional Tullamore Dew whiskey with a Bud back. I collect and enjoy books by authors with a Chicago connection. I like to wager on the ponies a few times a year, and March Madness is one of my favorite times of the year.

*My parents’ beloved Cards moved to St. Louis and then to Arizona.

**The Zephyrs moved, and became the Baltimore Bullets, and I believe are now the Washington Wizards.
